Least Expensive Car Brands to Maintain

May 8, 2024

Long-term maintenance costs can quickly add up, making it essential to choose a vehicle that won't break the bank when it comes to repairs and upkeep. To figure out how prices go up over time and vary among brands, Consumer Reports, a nonprofit organization, checked with people in their 2023 Annual Auto Surveys. They were asked how much they spent on all the upkeep stuff (like oil changes, tires, etc.) and fixing things in the past year.

Tesla owners reported the lowest maintenance expenses, averaging $580 for the initial five years of ownership and $3,455 for the subsequent five years, resulting in a total cost of $4,035 over ten years.

The most expensive brands were Land Rover, totaling $19,250 over 10 years, followed by Porsche at $14,090, and Mercedes-Benz at $10,525.

On the other side of the spectrum, the most costly options include a group of German car manufacturers along with Land Rover. Specifically, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche fall into this category.

This research indicates that expenses can increase significantly once the warranty and free maintenance periods end. Understanding how much it generally costs to own different brands can help people save cash over time. They can either pick a brand that's cheaper to maintain or plan their budget accordingly.

In summary, it's crucial to consider long-term maintenance costs when choosing a car brand. Consumer Reports' research highlights significant variations in expenses over time. As warranties expire, understanding these costs helps consumers make informed decisions, ensuring a smoother automotive ownership experience.
